Looks can be deceiving. The cover of this magazine, Ruff, Tuff & Buff, has two completely different smooth chested guys on the cover that don’t appear anywhere inside the magazine. Inside, it contains of scene of two sexy blue collar guys with hairy chests. WTF?
The magazine style, with pastel colors and graphic shapes, suggests it came out in the 1980’s. That would indicate why the publishers probably thought shaved chests were “in”, so they put someone else on the cover. “Those hairy chests and muscles are so 70s!”, they shrieked.
Low and behold, we have two hairy chested manly beauties in this little vignette involving a refrigerator repairman and the hunky customer. “The ice cubes weren’t the only things melting.”
Fans of this site know that I often award “Style Points” to certain photos. There are no rules for what does or does not constitute a Style Point. I’m not keeping track of Style Points and there is no winners or losers. It’s completely arbitrary and I am the sole judge. But I think you would agree that this photo session deserves some sort of recognition, don’t you?
Some of the style elements include:
-beige shag carpet
-longish feathered hair cuts, parted down the middle
-knit shirt with a zipper
-floral print Peter Max style throw pillow
This is only the tip of the iceberg. Perhaps someone might be ambitious enough to count and tabulate all the Style Points I’ve awarded on this blog. Could be a term paper for aspiring designers or students of fashion. You can see the rest in the VIP Room and use your student loan to pay for it.
Other than the tragic hipsters that wear their hair like Justin Bieber, most gay men have very short cropped hair. Back in the 70’s, long hair was a symbol of freedom and rebellion, regardless how unmanageable and ugly it actually looked. Most guys who grew their hair out actually hoped that it would look like this example of manhood on Mike Delfino. Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with those kind of hair genes, and their mop tops just looked like hell most days.
You can either admire his lovely haircut or be jealous of it. Personally, I would prefer to lust over his shapely ass than his hair. Look at the power behind that ass and how it must thrust against the anxious hole of his partner. I’ll take that anytime. Style Points awarded.
I have nothing specific to say about these new shots I just added to the VIP Room other than I think they are beautiful. Every photographer knows that you generally have to do an entire photo session to get one good picture. With porn, it’s a volume business, and unless the camera is pointed at the ceiling or floor, you publish them all. But when you weed out the marginal shots, there are some beautiful ones.
That doesn’t even take into account the beautiful boys. The first one on the left is obviously wearing eye make-up, if you didn’t notice. The second shot takes time to work with depth-of-field, and the third one, well, it’s just fucking hot. Style Points awarded.
I get a kick out of seeing long haired twinks in vintage gay porn. If you weren’t there for the cultural shift that allowed guys to grow their hair long as a symbol of independence, you might not understand. The youth movement (later known as the Baby Boomers) exercised their new-found freedom with long hair. Naturally, the longer your hair, the more freedom you had (theoretically) because that meant your parents, school or bosses weren’t controlling you. It was important to grow your hair as fast as you could so nobody bothered to actually style their hair, because you just wanted it as long as possible regardless how bad it looked.
The two guys in this set of photos from “A Hard Look” seem to fall into the category of wanting to grow their hair as long possible and parted in the middle without regard to how ugly it might look.
Style Points awarded not only for the unruly hair, but also the shag carpet, Earth Tones, the velvet painting, the round stereo speakers, and feathers in vases. (Feathers in vases??! What were they thinking?)

It’s unusual for me to come across a vintage gay porn movie from my collection that has sound, but I wasn’t sure I should even use it for this clip. The sound sucks so bad, I nearly just deleted it and added music, but I decided that the bad sound is actually part of the charm. “Hot Pants Voyeur” was made during the era when they didn’t have cheap sound recording ability when they shot these fly-by-night XXX movies. Instead, they brought in actors in post production to provide dialogue during the fuck scenes. At some points during this scene, I’m certain the actors weren’t even in the same room when they recorded it. Can you imagine how hard it must be for an actor to pretend they are having sex while delivering pithy, insightful, and stimulating dialogue? At the time, producers must have thought that “dirty talk” would actually enhance a scene. It took a long time for them to realize that’s not the case.
And as for the music, what little you could hear under the actors and generally bad recording technique actually sounds pretty good. I wish I could get a hold of more of that music in hifi.
The scene is two younger, slim twinky guys fucking in a bed on checked sheets. A guy is standing in the doorway, and later right outside the window watching all the action. Now, if the guys in bed turned their heads just slightly they would have instantly known they had company! Perhaps they were just as mesmerized by the voyeur’s hot pants as I was!
But these weren’t just any pair of hot pants. These were very early 1970’s style, high waisted gaberdine shorts with at least 12 big white buttons. Trust me when I tell you, a long row of white buttons was very stylish at the time. In fact, since I couldn’t buy a pair of my own, I actually sewed a set of white buttons on the fly of my favorite Levis.
More proof I was a budding poof even in Junior High. Style points awarded for this scene, but not for the sound!
The Night Visitor is another one of those magazines that really defines what vintage gay porn looked like, or what what we remember from that era. It’s a couple photo sessions in the leather / S&M vein, featuring two super hot guys that really symbolize the image of the 1970’s leather man. They are in their early 30’s with facial hair, trim v-shaped torso with perky pec and covered in dark fur. And ass-less chaps. Don’t forget the ass-less chaps.
So much of what we consider “gay culture” or the “gay lifestyle” was invented during my lifetime, and trust me, nobody knew what they were doing at the time. We made it up as we went along, and other than trying to honor the past whenever possible, we are still making it up as we go along, culture-wise, and politically. Gay porn back then was really short-sighted and only intended for a run of few months or a year. No one expected anyone would pay for collectible porn 40 years later, but vintage magazines are getting scarcer all the time. Believe it or not, it’s harder for me to find cheap vintage gay porn anymore. Prices have gone up a lot, but this site is still the same price since I opened it.
The type of men portrayed in this magazines are scarcer, too. If those same guys were still in their 30’s doing gay porn, they wouldn’t look like that. They’d have an extra 30 pounds of fake steroid muscle, multiple piercings and tribal tattoos. The ass-less chaps would be exactly the same, though. Some things never change.

It’s rare for me to find a vintage gay porn scene that has real “sync” sound with it. However, in the case of “Backroom Hook-Up”, it’s one of those bad old porn movies with dialogue that makes you want to cringe (if you can even understand the garbled voices!).
“Backroom Hook-Up” is a continuation of a scene I debuted recently called “Backdoor Barback“, and it takes place in a very butch gay bar in the late 1970’s with black walls, pool table and sawdust on the floor. My guess is it may have been The Detour in San Francisco. The concept of the movie is that sex happens while the bar is in full operation, with cut-aways to guys dancing and playing pool. However, you never actually see the supposed bar patrons in the same shot as the sex scenes.
The scene begins with shots of guys dancing, but only from the waist down, deliberately shaking their booties seductively. Two guys supposedly leave the dance floor for a private moment in the backroom and proceed to exchange blowjobs atop a stack of Budweiser cases. It’s interesting to note that everyone in the bar drinks Budweiser and the only other brand of beer is Michelob. Other than Bud Lite, I don’t think gay bars in San Francisco even carry Bud anymore.
