When I first started working in porn, my mentor told me some good advice, “Never let guys dance in gay porn.” When I first saw that shot of the skinny boy in a striped bikini bottom from a 1965 gay porn magazine, it reminded me of that sage advice, because he certainly was right! It’s not sexy, but it was pretty daring to try it.
My second impression of this photo was that it looks a lot like Olympic skater Johnny Weir, another example of someone who loves to take risks.

Vintage Gay Fashion and Glamor

“In fashion, one day you’re in, the next day you’re out.”
Part Two of my analysis of a new magazine I added to the VIP Room, “Muscleboy” from 1965 deals with the sociological aspects of some of the first emergence of gay identified fashion in magazines. Though this magazine was clearly geared to be the porn of it’s day (and really tame by today’s standards) it was a breakthrough to do a fashion spread (or editorial) with photos of obviously gay models wearing clothing that could purchased from an actual brick and mortar store. Again, this is from 1965, the era portrayed in Mad Men, when men’s fashion was very strict. To us, the clothes look goofy, but back then they must have thought they were from Mars!
The store was called “Town Squire” at 1318 Polk Street in San Francisco, the center of what was the gay neighborhood at that time. Just the fact that a store existed that openly catered to gay men is astounding. Innocent as it sounds, it was actually daring to put an address for such a business in print in a magazine like this during a period when employers and the government actually conducted witch hunts to find suspected homosexuals. And here’s an address where you could find them shopping!
And on a slightly related note, the blond guy in the fashion spreads also did some shots without wearing any fashionable clothes – or anything at all, as you can see below. Those eyes are some of the most seductive I’ve ever seen. Other than being adorable, I added this last photo as an example of what might have been defined as “glamor” to a young homosexual during the mid-60’s. Can you now see where Liberace got his taste?
Muscleboy – New in VIP Room

This may sound marginally creepy, but I was instantly turned on by the title “Muscleboy” Magazine and couldn’t wait for it to arrive. Turns out it was an early attempt at being a gay lifestyle magazine much like “OUT” Magazine today. Along with softcore pretty boy posing, it had articles, advertising and fashion spreads featuring clothes from a gay store on Polk Street in San Francisco.
There are so many interesting tidbits to say about this magazine, both erotically and culturally, but I’ll start with an observation that covers both. As I paged through the magazine for the first time, I noticed several pages were “enhanced”. My guess is that the original owner of this magazine was so starved for nudity and hardcore material that he drew penises on many of the pictures! Other times, his technique was to use an eraser to create outlines of where a hard cock would bulge in a pair of pants.This magazine must have been quite well-loved, and since it is from 1965, there really wasn’t much else to be found. The enhanced photo above is a good example. He added a big, fat cock where only a white posing strap existed, drew star bursts from the nipples, added hoop earrings, and some sort of whiskers or something. And if you look closely, there is even a man’s hand reaching out to grab that big dick, and rough outlines of a rope tying his wrists together.
At first I was disappointed that I purchased a magazine that wasn’t in pristine condition, but after I thought about it, I think it’s even more of a relic with the added enhancements, and there is a bit of artistic flair, too. Style points awarded.

L’Affaire Is Oo La La

Two hippies meet at a phone booth. (Phone booth? If you youngsters don’t know what a phone booth is, set down your Blackberry and go ask your dad.) Both these cute hippies have longish blondish hair, one has a mustache and long sideburns. He’s wearing brown button fly jeans and brown suede moccasin boots with fringe. Boy, did ever want a pair of those suede fringe boots back when I was in high school! I wanted the suede fringe vest more, but I finally got one of those a couple years ago. But those boots… whoa. Style points awarded. Right on.

Damn that eBay!
Yeah, I got sucked in once again by the lures of online crap auctions. It’s a little like gambling. There’s competition, you keep placing bets, then raising the ante and hoping for a big win. Well, last week I really indulged. Frustrated by one seller that has some really great magazines that are all way over priced, another seller was listing some very nice items at much lower, affordable prices. I took the bait.
Just on the heels of my recent splurge at a local thrift store, my eBay purchases have now started to trickle in. I am really back logged with magazines to scan and post to the site right now, but that’s actually a good thing. That means there is still plenty of product you haven’t seen, so it’s still worth your while to join the site and enjoy the updates as they come along.

I saw the cover of this magazine for sale on eBay with that long haired guy on top and I HAD to have it. I probably paid way too much for it, but he was just too cute to pass up. The red and pink sheets on the bed were the clincher, but I’ve spent money on stupider things.

Crimes of Fashion – 1970’s Style

The more I look at this magazine, “Hustler” (the male version, no relation), the more subtleties I see. This is in some ways the most stylish gay porn magazine I’ve ever seen! I’ve already blogged extensively about the wallpaper, the bedsheets, and the page layout. This time I was going to write about just the clothes, but there is sooo much more to drool about. Read on.
But what about the clothes? In a word, delicious. Look at that lamb’s wool vest. Sonny Bono made those vests famous along with the matching fur boots. But don’t stare at it for too long cause in 30 years you might wrap yourself around a tree while skiing just like poor old Sonny did. (BTW, was Sonny Bono sacrificed for bad fashion or for being a Republican? Hmm.)
Beyond the vest we see both budding porn stars wearing the same style collarless shirt with zipper and a big round pull tab. I had one of those shirts, too. In brown. And don’t forget the jeans with bleach spots! I remember having to put bleach spots on my own jeans because you couldn’t buy them in stores that way until sometime in the 1980’s.
But let’s look closely at the rest of this 1970’s fashionable gay porn tableau. Besides the fashion disasters, there is also the velvet couch, a look that never really goes out of style, I guess. But prior to the 1970’s you’d only see velvet couches in whore houses. The carpet is not shag, but it’s green sculptured carpet that was almost de rigueur in the day. (My sister chose the same color and pattern in three different residences during that period.)
Moving on, posters pinned to the wall were never allowed prior to the hippie days of the 70’s either. The chain lamp is a nice touch. (I have one just like it in the basement.) But the one iconic item that I almost missed is the velvet painting on the wall! Score! I think we have a winner here!

More Hustler Style – The Gay Kind

Since I got a lot of responses (laughter included) about the fun, fabulous examples of high style from the gay porn magazine I just added to the VIP Room entitled “Hustler”, I will give you some more teasers.
Did you like the sheets and gaudy page layouts so far? How about checking out the wallpaper this time? I remember having this same pattern of chubby naked women on my shower curtains back in the late 1970’s. The shower curtain came with the apartment, and I simply had to keep it. That pattern was prevalent in a lot of different fabrics and household items at the time. It was also very scandalous to sell that anything with naked women in places like K-Mart and Sears, but it happened.
