I don’t know where I read this, but I seem to recall that this scene was actually shot at Theater Rhinoceros, the landmark gay live theater in San Francisco. (The theater company is still active, but they gave up the lease on the old space.) The story goes, they were doing a play that took place on a ship and some crafty porn producer convinced them to rent the set during the day for his porn shoot. It makes sense, because the set is just a little too elaborate for a porn movie.
On board some sort of military ship, a young curly haired sailor is ordered to submit to an older, forceful officer. This is a very rare film from the late 1950’s by Apollo Studios. In it, a popular physique model of the time, Steve Wengryn, is wandering the dusty mountain roads of Woodland Hills in the still very rustic San Fernando Valley. It’s so hot and sunny, that Steve decides to take off his shirt, and after a few minutes, removes his pants and shoes, too. So imagine a man walking around an LA suburb in just his jockey shorts. If you were sitting in the shade, drinking iced tea and reading a book and this nearly naked man came to your door, what would you do?
Well, if you’re this guy (who happens to be sitting in super tight cut-off jeans shredded all the way up to the waist) you naturally let him in. Not only that, you size him up and decide to take some “artistic” physique photos. In what must have been a shock beyond compare, the model actually strips down NAKED on camera! After few shots indoors, they move outside to shoot. After he’s gotten the shots he needs, the photographer develops the film in the dark room while the model waits under tree, sipping iced tea. When he emerges from the dark room with 8×10 prints, he shows them to the model for his approval. The End.

Not sure what that means, but it could be that the film maker was afraid the models wouldn’t cooperate in any “fag stuff”, or else their schedules just didn’t jive. Who knows. The Night Visitor is another one of those magazines that really defines what vintage gay porn looked like, or what what we remember from that era. It’s a couple photo sessions in the leather / S&M vein, featuring two super hot guys that really symbolize the image of the 1970’s leather man. So much of what we consider “gay culture” or the “gay lifestyle” was invented during my lifetime, and trust me, nobody knew what they were doing at the time. We made it up as we went along, and other than trying to honor the past whenever possible, we are still making it up as we go along, culture-wise, and politically. Gay porn back then was really short-sighted and only intended for a run of few months or a year. No one expected anyone would pay for collectible porn 40 years later, but vintage magazines are getting scarcer all the time. Believe it or not, it’s harder for me to find cheap vintage gay porn anymore. Prices have gone up a lot, but this site is still the same price since I opened it.
The type of men portrayed in this magazines are scarcer, too. If those same guys were still in their 30’s doing gay porn, they wouldn’t look like that. They’d have an extra 30 pounds of fake steroid muscle, multiple piercings and tribal tattoos. The ass-less chaps would be exactly the same, though. Some things never change.

Scotty Cunningham is undoubtedly one of the favorite stars of fans of early gay porn / vintage physique photography. I just added one of my most prized magazines to the VIP Room, Male Figure Review, and Scotty is prominently represented in it.

“Souvenir Porfolio” is one of the gems that I’ve been looking forward to adding to the site. THIS is one of the best examples of what I picture porn from the 1970’s should look like. The magazine it came from consisted of still photos from an unknown and forgotten movie scene and it didn’t even mention the title of the movie. Someday I hope to run across this movie because it looks absolutely amazing.
Like I said, this is a textbook example of what we imagine gay porn from the 70’s is supposed to look like. Huge muscular men with beards, mustaches and macho swagger dressed in leather in a completely black room. The leather hoods add a bit of mystery and deviance to the sex play. Back then, leather men and leather sex were shrouded in mystery and frightened the pants off naive twinks (like me!). The fear aspect has always been part of the leather mystique, but ever since “safe, sane and consensual” became the mantra, the fear aspect has waned. The community as a whole is better off because of self-regulation within the leather scene, but the downside is that the rebelliousness has been watered down.
I can’t identify any of the porn stars in these photos, but they all look vaguely reminiscent of somebody either in porn or in real life. In fact, just the other day, I swear I saw one of these models at Gold’s gym. He’ s more likely to be the offspring of the guy in the photos.
