I just added a complete scan of a magazine called “Tough Guys Cum Last”, and I thought the title sounded really awkward, so I thought about what it might mean. I recall there was a movie title of something like “Tough Guys Don’t Dance”, so I looked it up. Sure enough, it was a 1987 movie with Ryan O’Neal and Isabella Rossellini. The title at the time was ripe with parodies because it came around the time of “Real Men Don’t Eat Quiche”.

So this magazine had the bastardized title of “Tough Guys Cum Last”, which makes no sense from a sexual angle, either. Is it polite to let your partner cum first? Or is politeness sort of anti-tough guy? Does holding out make you more macho? I don’t know, this is all weird.

But in looking at the models, they seemed familiar, but certainly not from around 1987. Through process of elimination, I suspect these photos were recycled from an old Target movie from 1978 called “Swingin’”, starring Jeremy Brent and Jeff Cameron that were part of the Bullet series.

And before you ask, NO, I do not have the Bullet movies on this website. Why? Everyone has seen them a million times, the original masters have been lost, so the best copies are only transferred from VHS, and it’s undetermined as to who owns the rights anymore. I’m not getting into the middle of that mess!

Looks can be deceiving. The cover of this magazine, Ruff, Tuff & Buff, has two completely different smooth chested guys on the cover that don’t appear anywhere inside the magazine. Inside, it contains of scene of two sexy blue collar guys with hairy chests. WTF?

The magazine style, with pastel colors and graphic shapes, suggests it came out in the 1980’s. That would indicate why the publishers probably thought shaved chests were “in”, so they put someone else on the cover. “Those hairy chests and muscles are so 70s!”, they shrieked.

In the 1970’s the hottest leather guys in the gay neighborhoods all drove motorcycles. On a given night you could tell if a leather bar was busy or not just by the number of motorcycles parked in front. I don’t know where I read this, but I seem to recall that this scene was actually shot at Theater Rhinoceros, the landmark gay live theater in San Francisco. (The theater company is still active, but they gave up the lease on the old space.) The story goes, they were doing a play that took place on a ship and some crafty porn producer convinced them to rent the set during the day for his porn shoot. It makes sense, because the set is just a little too elaborate for a porn movie.
