The Young Physique – Annual 1962

beefcake male magazines 1962

Guys, THIS is the kind of magazine that you came to Vintage Bareback searching for! It’s from 1962 and it’s the big “annual” issue of The Young Physique Magazine, and it is a real stunner. Though there is no nudity, it’s the traditional beefcake magazine of posing straps and muscle men from you dad’s era.

The photography is almost on par with fashion magazines of the time and since the guys mostly kept there clothes on and didn’t have to do much man-on-man touching, the photographers were able to recruit a wider range of beautiful men. At the same time, they faced the challenge of how to not only make pretty pictures, but they had to be creative enough to make it appealing enough to closeted gay men that they would take the risk of ordering it through the mail while it was still illegal. That was a lot to think about, especially when there was no precedent set for running that kind of business.

I scanned all 70 shots from this once a year issue of The Young Physique, and though the paper it was printed on was low grade, most of the shots were full-page sized, so I was able to get pretty good scans. Go ahead, spend $10 to take a look at the guys your “funny uncle” was jerking off to before you were born!

TV commercial for the old New York bath house, Man’s Country. My question is, what TV station did that run on? “Come once and you’ll come again and again!”

These shots are from “Muscle Twink Voyeur” which is currently available for viewing in the VIP Room. Who knows how long it’s been since this movie was last seen in wide distribution? So many old movies from 40 years ago have just been lost, never to be seen again. It’s disheartening for an artist when their work is just tossed out in the trash because some new technology or worse, some new law prevents it from being enjoyed by another generation.

By buying a VIP Membership to Vintage Bareback, you are indirectly help preserve this old films. Support film preservation!

obscene diary from onur karaoglu on Vimeo.

During the 1950s, a professor and tattoo artist named Samuel Steward chronicled his sex life in drawings, letters, photographs, sexual paraphernalia and other items, and in so doing created documentary evidence of his experience of gay life and homosexuality in American culture at that time. “Obscene Diary,” an exhibition now on view at the Museum of Sex that includes many of Steward’s personal artifacts, drawings and photographs, is a trove of information about how a community of gay men lived in the 50s and 60s. Show runs till January 17th, 2012.

XXX Rated Twist Party Cartoon

Thursday, June 30th, 2011 by admin

“The Twist Party” is an XXX rated animation in the 1960’s cartoon style straight from old Disney or Hanna Barbera. It starts out very authentic and but soon turns very gay. One of the party goers spies a hot muscle hunk with a gigantic ass and decides to spice up the party by putting on stripper record. In no time, the men all strip down to underwear and it goes down hill from there. The guy with the giant ass spreads his cheeks and becomes the bottom boy for the entire party. They even go so far as to show his colon filling up with more and more cum as he gets fucked by guy after guy. Soon the entire party is men butt fucking, while the women faint at the sight.

If you’ll notice, the interesting twist in this cartoon is that all the big, hunky studs are the bottoms and skinny guys are the tops!

Porn Archeology

vintage porn

The magazines I scan and post on this site have no copyright information, no contact addresses, and sadly, no way to identify the dates they were published. That fact is good for me in that I probably won’t get sued, but for archival purposes, it makes it more challenging. Having actually lived through the eras depicted in most of these magazines, I have a pretty good eye for identifying dates based on several factors. The clues are mostly in the clothing, furniture and products you see in the backgrounds.

This particular photo gave me a big clue to the date is was published simply by that odd bracelet the guy on top is wearing. To an untrained eye, it’s just an ugly bracelet, but I saw something more.

The bracelet bears the name, rank and serial number of an American Prisoner of War or MIA (Missing In Action) from the Viet Nam War. A student organization began collecting donations for these bracelets to bring attention to those missing from the war. The project was started by Carol Bates and officially launched in November 1970. It cost 75 cents to produce them and they sold for only $2.50 so everyone could afford them. They were made versions in gold, silver, stainless steel, colored aluminum, copper, and brass. I recall very popular to wear these POW/MIA bracelets in a very short amount of time, even with kids in my Junior High School. Bob Hope and Martha Raye were honorary co-chairs of the organization.

People wore those bracelets for many years, but the Viet Nam War ended by 1975, so I suspect this magazine was probably published sometime in 1971-1973. The action is hardcore, so that makes it even more rare for that era. All the more reason to join the VIP Room to see this museum piece of erotica.

Leatherman: The Legend of Chuck Renslow

Friday, June 17th, 2011 by admin

Chuck Renslow

The author of this book review is an important and well-connected member of gay history. He was eye-witness to many of the events and knew many of the people involved in some of the stories told in this book about Chuck Renslow. Renslow, unlike most historical figures of modern gay life, IS still alive and is still working hard on projects like the Leather History Museum and his signature yearly event, International Mr. Leather.

The most important quote below: …Born a year before Harvey Milk and politically active 20 years before Milk hit Castro…

Book Review by Dr. Jack Fritscher

Published in Bay Area Reporter June 9, 2011.

Leatherman: The Legend of Chuck Renslow by Tracy Baim and Owen Keehnen; Prairie Avenue Productions, $24.99

In Casablanca, “sooner or later everybody comes to Rick’s.” In Chicago, the world comes to Chuck’s. Since 1950, Chuck Renslow, now 82 and one of the most famous gay men on the planet, has safely hosted thousands of GLBT visitors at his 30 venues, from his legendary Gold Coast bar (1960-88) to his International Mr. Leather Contest (1979) and his prestigious Leather Archives & Museum (1991). For 60 years, Renslow, a politically aggressive Democrat in the Chicago Machine, has been a person of interest to cops, politicians, fans, and frenemies. Read the rest of this entry »

Rare Vintage Hardcore With Sound – Backroom Hook-Up

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011 by admin

Vintage Bareback

It’s rare for me to find a vintage gay porn scene that has real “sync” sound with it. However, in the case of “Backroom Hook-Up”, it’s one of those bad old porn movies with dialogue that makes you want to cringe (if you can even understand the garbled voices!).

“Backroom Hook-Up” is a continuation of a scene I debuted recently called “Backdoor Barback“, and it takes place in a very butch gay bar in the late 1970’s with black walls, pool table and sawdust on the floor. My guess is it may have been The Detour in San Francisco. The concept of the movie is that sex happens while the bar is in full operation, with cut-aways to guys dancing and playing pool. However, you never actually see the supposed bar patrons in the same shot as the sex scenes.

The scene begins with shots of guys dancing, but only from the waist down, deliberately shaking their booties seductively. Two guys supposedly leave the dance floor for a private moment in the backroom and proceed to exchange blowjobs atop a stack of Budweiser cases. It’s interesting to note that everyone in the bar drinks Budweiser and the only other brand of beer is Michelob. Other than Bud Lite, I don’t think gay bars in San Francisco even carry Bud anymore.

Clips From Upcoming Wakefield Poole Documentary

Thursday, April 21st, 2011 by admin

Wakefield Poole

Last year I attended a fundraiser for this upcoming documentary about gay porn director Wakefield Poole. Not only did Wakefield Poole make his mark in adult films, he was also a dancer on Broadway and television, and for a short time, ran a retail store in the Castro.

The first link below leads to a video plea for help to raise money to pay for the rights to use film clips necessary to tell the story. After the “Pledge Break”, there are some fabulous segments from old TV shows and a brief clip of Maury Povich introducing a segment about Wakefield Poole’s store, Hot Flash America.

The second link takes you to the trailer for the film. The third link takes you to an earlier blog entry when I met Wakefield Poole.

Backdoor Barback

Friday, April 8th, 2011 by admin

JavaScript is disabled!
To display this content, you need a JavaScript capable browser.

At last! A vintage gay porn movie on this site that has SOUND! The actual real sound recorded during filming, too! Granted, the audio sucks big time, but it’s the real thing. And of course, the music leaves a lot to be desired, too. It’s the same bad production house tinny muzak you’re heard in porn movies since the Stone Age, but it gives a certain authenticity to it.

I titled the scene “Backdoor Barback” because it all takes place in a bar, supposedly while the place is in full swing and full of customers on the dance floor. In the full clip in the VIP Room, you actually see footage of guys disco dancing in a cut-away shot! The bar looks very familiar and could actually have been the Detour on Market Street in San Francisco (now called Trigger).

The scene begins with a hot mustached daddy who has already captured his prey – a blond shaggy haired twink who is the barback. He’s already got the twink stripped down and sitting on the bar while Daddy is sucking his dick. The bartender asked if they need anything and they respond, “Poppers!”

The bartender actually brings them the good stuff, Amyl Nitrate, so they crack the capsule and both take a big snort. The twink shoots a load almost immediately thereafter, and probably caught the crew by surprise. Mustache guy doesn’t mind the cum at all and continues sucking the twink until he’s ready to hop up in the bar himself to commence fucking the horny twink. Daddy shoots his load and surprisingly enough, the youth has enough jizz saved up to shoot a second time!

If you enjoyed the trailer above, get a VIP Membership to get a slice of gay bar culture in the late 70’s. How do I know it’s from the late 70’s? If you listen to the music, there are some segments that are clearly references the Star Wars Theme, which came out in 1977.
