Rather Fight Than Swish

Mad About The Boy

Just when I thought I had to get rid of all my old records – I absolutely MUST find these!

Camp Records was a record label based out of California in the 1960s that specialized in producing anonymous gay-themed novelty records and singles, mostly sold out of the backs of beefcake magazines.

Camp Records’ releases typically consisted of parodies of existing songs or musical styles, primarily revised folk melodies with the lyrics rewritten to reflect a camp sensibility. The arrangements were usually simple, consisting of spare instrumentation and multiple-voice harmonies, but ranged in style from cocktail piano bar to Latin exotica.

The songs themselves comically portrayed the world of the American homosexual subculture, often relying on broad stereotypes, gay slang, and saucy double entendres for their comic effect. As an example, their single “Li’l Liza Mike” rewrote the lyrics to the popular musical standard “Li’l Liza Jane” to tell of a man’s befuddlement at the behavior of his butch lesbian girlfriend. The song was credited to “Byrd E. Bath & the Gay Blades.”

Another release, “I’d Rather Fight Than Swish,” was written in the rollicking style of early rock and roll, and featured a swaggering, Elvis Presley-style lead singer. The song’s lyrics told of a macho outlaw biker’s desires to physically assault effeminate gay men, but as the song progresses it makes clear that the biker himself is a closeted homosexual. However, it could be argued that his closeting was because gay culture excluded working class, masculine men at the time. The song’s title is a play on the Tareyton cigarette ad slogan Us Tareyton smokers would rather fight than switch!, introduced in 1963; the record was available in 1964.[1]

Their single “Stanley the Manly Transvestite” was credited to a singer named “Rodney Dangerfield”, but it is unlikely that the song was performed by the popular comic, Rodney Dangerfield, and was instead simply a coincidental choice of a stage name.

Camp Records released two full-length LPs: The first, “The Queen Is in the Closet” consisted of ten songs in the style of the above mentioned singles. The second was called “Mad About the Boy.” This was an unusual experiment, consisting of a number of mainstream popular jazz torch songs in which women sing of their romantic feelings toward men. The Camp Records release simply rerecorded these songs with male vocalists without changing the song’s use of gender, resulting in love songs sung by men to men.

As Camp Records’ releases all date back to the early 60s, and none were released with a copyright notice, all the recordings have now passed into the public domain.

Peter Berlin 8mm Film Discovered

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010 by admin

That Boy

I had lunch with John Karr today. We’re working on launching a website to archive his 30+ years of gay porn movie reviews. The site is not complete, but you can get a sneak peak by visiting KarrnalKnowledge.com. While I was there, he gave me an unmarked 8mm film. We didn’t know what was on it, and he wasn’t even sure if it was porn.

I took it home and put it on the projector and turns out it was Peter Berlin’s “Blueboys Pt. 2″. I got very exciting thinking it was some extremely rare missing footage. Karr was a major contributor to the documentary about Peter Berlin, “That Man“, that came out a few years ago, and he said there was some “lost” footage out there.

Well, it turns out this film is NOT so rare. It’s contained in the DVD extras on the re-release of Peter Berlin’s “That Boy“. Though the content is readily  available, the actual 8mm copy is still very rare. Even the producer of the documentary only had Beta copies to master the DVD, so I will give him the 8mm copy for the official Peter Berlin archive.

And coincidentally, I was going through photos from Easter 2008 this afternoon, and found this shot of the real Peter Berlin! (see below)

Made in 1974, hot on the heels of Peter’s first starring role in Nights in Black Leather, That Boy was the first and only feature length film directed, produced, written, and edited by its star, Peter Berlin.

Previously only available on VHS tapes, That Boy is now presented in this Special Edition, the only version of the film authorized by Peter Berlin himself.

That Boy Special Edition contains:

  • Digitally remastered feature film
  • Two short films by Peter Berlin–”Blueboys” and “Search”
  • Audio commentary for “That Boy” featuring Peter Berlin and noted porn reviewer John F. Karr
  • Peter Berlin photo galleries (over 60 images)
  • Never-before-seen raw footage from Peter’s Vault
  • Original trailer for Peter’s first film Nights in Black Leather

Butch Magazine Volume 5

Sunday, August 29th, 2010 by admin

Butch Magazine DSI

Butch Magazine DSI

This is from Butch Magazine Volume 5, put out by DSI (Directory Service Industries) in 1966. The title, Butch, may be a bit misleading, but there are some fun archival photos from a period where porn was still dangerous and experimental. The best part is the flawlessly lacquered hair piled up into the perfect pompadour.

Read what it says on the table of contents page:

BUTCH is the international naturalist magazine. It is dedicated to the furtherance of realism in art, photography, and literature – without idealization of the beautiful or avoidance of the ugly. The photography, art and articles contianed in BUTCH are offered to illuminate the conviction that the body of man is clean and wholesome and that there can be no obscenity in God’s handiwork. It is our belief that the ability of man to be one with himself, to have a high opinion of the portions of his body so long rejected and degraded, will make him stronger, not weaker; more moral instead of less moral. BUTCH hopes to do its part to bring about a world wherein man will, from the moment of birth, accept himself – not with guilt and shame, but with esteem and serenity – in his totality as God made him.

The publishers of BUTCH hold that all of us, every citizen, have a common ground to defend. There is no place in our society for efforts, whether legal or extra-legal, to coerce the taste of others, to confine adults to reading and viewing matter deemed suitable for children, or to inhibit the efforts of writers and photographers to achieve artistic expression. Those concerned with freedom have the responsibility of seeing to it that each individual book or publication, whatever its contents, is given the freedom of expression granted to it by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.

Wow! That’s more than a bit obtuse! Sounds like it was written by a guy in a ruffled shirt with a quill pen! Notice he didn’t mention anything about jerking off (…other than the ability of man to be one with himself...).

The Why Not

THE WHY NOT – Victor J. Banks’s scorching excursion through the gay world of the lost and the not-so-sure…

This is the cover of a gay pulp novel. How do I know it’s got gay subject matter? Maybe the lavender background with pink lettering gave it away! Well, I’m often lost and not-so-sure, but there’s one thing I am sure of – those green top-siders are FABulous!

Gay Clone Defined

Thursday, August 19th, 2010 by admin

Gay Male Style in 1970's

I use the term “clone” on Vintage Bareback often to describe a style adopted by gay men in the 1970’s, but it’s a term that is now foreign to younger gays. Finally, a visual aid has surfaced that accurately depicts the uniform of a “gay clone” and distinguished it from the “gay jock” look.

I hope this is informative! Please bookmark this page for future reference.

Cowboys Demonstrate Brown Leather Toys

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010 by admin

To display this content, you need a JavaScript capable browser.

I discovered another very rare vintage gay porn movie that is not the usual format for a porn movie. Even though it came from sometime in the mid-seventies when the “format” for porn movies was still in the process of being developed, this one was an oddity even then. After a few minutes of watching this movie it became this that this is essentially a “demonstration catalog” for leather sex toys. But what makes it even more unusual is that the leather harnesses, ball stretchers, cock rings, etc. being demonstrated are not black leather but brown leather!

Black leather associated with kinky gay sex mostly comes from an aesthetic of urban motorcycle chic with some cross over to military and police uniforms. Back in the 70’s I recall there was more of a distinction between bars and groups that catered to the “Levi/Leather” crowd vs. the “SM Leather” crowd. The scene has changed in that everything has gotten more mainstream and “anything goes”.  The old guard maintained strict dress codes for bars and club events on the pretense of setting a specific erotic tone. Those dress codes were later challenged and dismissed due in part to inclusionary political correctness, and in part a need for expanding creativity.

These leather products were apparently aimed and rural types as well as cowboy wannabes, but the market for erotic leather gear in shades of brown did not catch on. Why? Is there ever any reason why some fashions catch on and others don’t? No! Blame it partially on the avalanche of gays moving out of rural areas to big cities like LA, San Francisco, New York and Chicago in the late 70’s and succumbing to the desire to be chic and urbane rather than country bumpkins.

Without getting too deep into gay history and politics, let’s talk about this particular movie. Richard Locke is one of the hot cowboys that appear in this movie to demonstrate leather gear. You may know him from the big classic Joe Gage movies of the era, LA Tool and Die, Kansas City Trucking and El Paso Wrecking Company. Throughout the 20 minute “motion picture catalog”, each product demonstration is done as it would be in a sex scene. Lots of studded cock cages, things to stretch the balls with hanging weights, often using horse shoes.

Richard Locke and his equally sexy daddy partner make this an unusual visual treat for cowboy fans and hardcore sex toy fans in many interesting scenarios in a barn and out in the corral.

SF Pride Photos 2003-2009

Saturday, June 26th, 2010 by admin

San Francisco Gay Pride

I just went through my archive of photos from San Francisco Pride from 2003 through 2009. This time I pared it down to just the very best shots to give customers the best user experience possible. VIP Members can view them at LavenderLounge.com in the Paparazzi Pics/Streetfair Skin section.

All photos in the Lavender Lounge VIP Room are viewable as a slide show, too. I was surprised how many naked men and blatant sex was actually happening at the celebration that immediately follows the parade.

Today’s sample photos are from San Francisco Pride 2009, and I will be giving you a sample from each year over the weekend, leading up to NEW photos I will be adding from 2010 San Francisco Pride and Pink Saturday.
