This is the cover of a gay pulp novel. How do I know it’s got gay subject matter? Maybe the lavender background with pink lettering gave it away! Well, I’m often lost and not-so-sure, but there’s one thing I am sure of – those green top-siders are FABulous!
When I first started working in porn, my mentor told me some good advice, “Never let guys dance in gay porn.” When I first saw that shot of the skinny boy in a striped bikini bottom from a 1965 gay porn magazine, it reminded me of that sage advice, because he certainly was right! It’s not sexy, but it was pretty daring to try it.
My second impression of this photo was that it looks a lot like Olympic skater Johnny Weir, another example of someone who loves to take risks.
I use the term “clone” on Vintage Bareback often to describe a style adopted by gay men in the 1970’s, but it’s a term that is now foreign to younger gays. Finally, a visual aid has surfaced that accurately depicts the uniform of a “gay clone” and distinguished it from the “gay jock” look.

Maybe I’m the only one who notices these things (or cares) but part of the fun of collecting vintage gay porn is spotting things in the background. No Holes Barred is a magazine with a photo set that looks very familiar. I’ve seen that same plaid couch a couple times, and maybe even recognize one of the models, but there is no indication anywhere who shot it or where the location was.
I picked these two examples of things in the background most people would miss. First is the poster on the wall of Senator George McGovern. He was a Democratic presidential candidate in 1972 (lost to Richard Nixon) and somewhat of a liberal because he was against the Vietnam War. The youth backed him because they didn’t want to get drafted, so that’s why it was common to have his poster on the wall.
The other interesting thing you might miss in the second photo was the shoes. I had a pair of shoes exactly like those in 11th grade, and it wasn’t till I went on the Senior Class Trip to New York that I was able to find platform shoes with higher heels. Around the time these photos were taken, the really tall platform shoes for men were only worn by rock stars because they had to get them custom made. I was so proud to have the highest pair of platforms in my school that fall!

Part Two of my analysis of a new magazine I added to the VIP Room, “Muscleboy” from 1965 deals with the sociological aspects of some of the first emergence of gay identified fashion in magazines. Though this magazine was clearly geared to be the porn of it’s day (and really tame by today’s standards) it was a breakthrough to do a fashion spread (or editorial) with photos of obviously gay models wearing clothing that could purchased from an actual brick and mortar store. Again, this is from 1965, the era portrayed in Mad Men, when men’s fashion was very strict. To us, the clothes look goofy, but back then they must have thought they were from Mars!
The store was called “Town Squire” at 1318 Polk Street in San Francisco, the center of what was the gay neighborhood at that time. Just the fact that a store existed that openly catered to gay men is astounding. Innocent as it sounds, it was actually daring to put an address for such a business in print in a magazine like this during a period when employers and the government actually conducted witch hunts to find suspected homosexuals. And here’s an address where you could find them shopping!
And on a slightly related note, the blond guy in the fashion spreads also did some shots without wearing any fashionable clothes – or anything at all, as you can see below. Those eyes are some of the most seductive I’ve ever seen. Other than being adorable, I added this last photo as an example of what might have been defined as “glamor” to a young homosexual during the mid-60’s. Can you now see where Liberace got his taste?
Besides the Nude Male Olympics that I wrote about the other day from the magazine “Mr. Sun“, there are three other photo series in that issue. One is a character study of a studly black guy with a mustache, another is a little romantic romp with two twinks taken from a softcore 8mm “nudie film”, but I found some decidedly anti-aesthetic quality to a photo series in the same magazine titled “The Wrestlers”.
Neither of them look like wrestlers, nor to they make any moves that remotely look like wrestling moves. In fact, the “wrestling match” takes place at a non-AAU sanctioned location – a vinyl couch. As always, it’s the subtle things in the shot that intrigue me the most. In this case, the photo of a chubby pinup girl on the floor, the one shoe that looks exactly like a pair I wore at the time, and the rug with the frayed edges. But, best of all, lets talk about the guy wearing black calf-length socks.
As soon as the porn business came of age, one of the first things that is universally acknowledged as “not sexy” is men wearing black socks during sex. That alone often indelibly marks a porn movie as poorly made or cheap, but in this case, I think the black socks are what give it it’s charm. What we have here is two average looking guys trying to have sex on camera without really doing anything that actually looks like sex (it’s tougher than you think…). They fumble around in several awkward positions throughout the photo session, including the other decidedly un-sexy pose – resting his balls on the head of someone sleeping. Wow, hard-on city!

I discovered another very rare vintage gay porn movie that is not the usual format for a porn movie. Even though it came from sometime in the mid-seventies when the “format” for porn movies was still in the process of being developed, this one was an oddity even then. After a few minutes of watching this movie it became this that this is essentially a “demonstration catalog” for leather sex toys. But what makes it even more unusual is that the leather harnesses, ball stretchers, cock rings, etc. being demonstrated are not black leather but brown leather!
Black leather associated with kinky gay sex mostly comes from an aesthetic of urban motorcycle chic with some cross over to military and police uniforms. Back in the 70’s I recall there was more of a distinction between bars and groups that catered to the “Levi/Leather” crowd vs. the “SM Leather” crowd. The scene has changed in that everything has gotten more mainstream and “anything goes”. The old guard maintained strict dress codes for bars and club events on the pretense of setting a specific erotic tone. Those dress codes were later challenged and dismissed due in part to inclusionary political correctness, and in part a need for expanding creativity.
These leather products were apparently aimed and rural types as well as cowboy wannabes, but the market for erotic leather gear in shades of brown did not catch on. Why? Is there ever any reason why some fashions catch on and others don’t? No! Blame it partially on the avalanche of gays moving out of rural areas to big cities like LA, San Francisco, New York and Chicago in the late 70’s and succumbing to the desire to be chic and urbane rather than country bumpkins.
Without getting too deep into gay history and politics, let’s talk about this particular movie. Richard Locke is one of the hot cowboys that appear in this movie to demonstrate leather gear. You may know him from the big classic Joe Gage movies of the era, LA Tool and Die, Kansas City Trucking and El Paso Wrecking Company. Throughout the 20 minute “motion picture catalog”, each product demonstration is done as it would be in a sex scene. Lots of studded cock cages, things to stretch the balls with hanging weights, often using horse shoes.
Richard Locke and his equally sexy daddy partner make this an unusual visual treat for cowboy fans and hardcore sex toy fans in many interesting scenarios in a barn and out in the corral.

This movie could easily have been forgotten if it wasn’t for one single element that makes it unique – one character wears a pair of jeans covered in giant peace symbols. Clothing like that was a bold fashion statement at a time when the world was only accustomed to standard shapes, muted colors, and patterns limited to subtle checks, plaids and pinstripes. Clothing with outrageous graphics, colors and extreme shapes (bell bottom pants, wide lapel shirts, mini shirts, etc.) arrived in the late 60’s, but many of us couldn’t get ahold of those styles until well into the 70’s.
This movie was probably from the early 1970’s and appears to be from Europe. The movie opens with a brief clip of a bleached blond boy walking down a very European style street and meets a cute brunette who is wearing the peace sign jeans with a wide belt cinched tight to accent his tiny waist. And yes, he does fill out those jeans very nicely.
The blond takes his time seducing unzipping the peace sign jeans and pulling out a nice sized uncut cock. At this point, if you look closely, the blond has long, painted fingernails, also a rarity at the time. He gives a slow, seductive, lip smacking blowjob. He finally gets his own pants off to reveal a cute little pure white butt. He gets bent over the wooden arm of a Danish Modern chair (that would fetch a hefty price from collectors today) to get plowed by the uncut brunette.
