I’ve never been to Fire Island, but I was out and gay in 1976. This is a fun video to watch, but you gotta think deeper in viewing it. Yes, the gay people at this resort all look as “liberated” as they do today, but you must take into account there weren’t many places in the world you could be that liberated at that time. Styles have changed, but this film depicted real people doing real things, so it doesn’t look all that foreign because it really wasn’t that long ago.
Nelson Sullivan was enrolled in film school when he shot this Super 8 film at Fire Island, a gay-friendly New York City getaway. Around this time, Nelson and his partner owned a salon on Fire Island called David/Nelson.
